Casino Injuries: How Often Do They Really Happen?

Biloxi, Mississippi has many fantastic casinos that provide great entertainment. When people go to a casino, they expect to gamble, see a show, and enjoy the social atmosphere. But some casinos may pose a liability threat when their owners don’t do regular maintenance or take measures to keep the casinos safe.

If you or a loved one has ever been injured in a casino, you can get legal aid. A Biloxi casino injury lawyer from Corban Gunn, Attorney at Law can help you get the compensation you need for your injuries.

What Causes Casino Injuries?

When casino owners don’t take care of their properties, everyone who goes there is at risk of getting injured. Casino owners should ensure that the building and people are safe, but regular maintenance and security upkeep is also essential. All of the following may contribute to injuries:

  • Slip and Fall. Not cleaning up spills or having old, uneven carpets all could cause someone to fall. People can get concussions, sprains, and bruises from falls.
  • Unsafe Equipment. Everything in the casino needs to be secure so the patrons aren’t at risk from something falling or tipping over.
  • Overcrowding. Too many people in a casino can lead to trampling injuries. Rooms shouldn’t be over capacity and the casino needs to monitor that.
  • Security Issues. Sometimes, people can get in fights at a casino. There needs to be security to stop any attacks by an angry or intoxicated individual.
  • Parking Lot Accidents. Casino parking lots need to have clear signage, lighting, and even pavement so everyone can navigate the property safely.

What Should You Do After Sustaining a Casino Injury?

Your actions after a casino injury could possibly affect your claim. It’s important to take care of yourself and make sure you don’t do anything to jeopardize your claim and settlement.

  • Go to a Doctor. Call 911 if you need medical attention immediately. If there isn’t an emergency, you should still visit a medical professional for an evaluation as soon as possible to see if you have injuries. Before you leave the casino, you should file a detailed report about the accident while it’s still fresh in your mind. Be sure to note how it happened and how you were hurt.
  • Keep Evidence of Your Injuries. You should document your injuries with photographs so you have visual evidence. Also get copies of medical documents that details what you’ve had to do since you were injured. You should include visiting doctors, hospitals, any procedures you needed to have, prescriptions, and rehabilitation. If anyone from the casino apologized to you for your injury, get their name and contact information.
  • Hire a Casino Injury Lawyer. Don’t speak to people from the casino until you’ve spoken with a trusted casino injury lawyer. The casino will most likely have insurance representatives who will want you to make a statement or to settle this without an attorney to help you out. They want to settle the matter as quickly as possible and won’t be working hard to get you compensation. They can use any statements you make against you and could reduce your final settlement. Your lawyer can facilitate communication between you and the casino representatives.

Can Technology-Aided Trucker Hats Save Lives?

Can Technology-Aided Trucker Hats Save Lives?

Truck drivers have demanding work schedules. Their job often has them on the road for weeks at a time, and then they get some time at home. During those weeks, truckers drive all over the country to deliver goods. They need to stick to their schedule and make sure the trucks get to their destinations on time.

But this brings its own set of problems. Driving for long periods over the course of a few weeks will make anyone tired. And when you’re driving next to a trucker, you don’t know if they’re on hour two of their first day driving or hour six of a trip where they drove eight hours the previous day. As a result, the exhaustion can lead to truck accidents.

If you or a loved one has been hurt in an accident involving a truck, a Mississippi truck accident lawyer can help you with your claim. You won’t have to worry about dealing with insurance adjusters trying to make you settle early, or gathering all the information for you claim on your own. Corban Gunn, a personal injury lawyer in Biloxi, MS, has experience in truck accident cases. He’s represented citizens of Mississippi for years and is ready to fight for your rights.

Truckers Battle Exhaustion with Strict Deadlines

The United States has about 3.5 million truck drivers. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported in 2014 that 85 percent of trucks in fatal crashes were large trucks. There were 3,903 fatalities that year, and 73 percent of the people who lost their lives were in other vehicles.

With so many truck drivers on the road adhering to a schedule that could have them driving up to 14 consecutive hours, there’s no wonder that there are still thousands of truck accident fatalities per year.

Technology Can Help Keep Truckers Awake

A new invention by Ford and a Sao-Paulo based agency called GTB aims to help solve this problem. The Ford SafeCap is a trucker hat that has technology that recognizes when the driver is making motions indicating they’re about to fall asleep.

Certain head movements, like the head resting backward, and muscles relaxing, are early signs that the truck driver is going to fall asleep. They aren’t yet at that stage – and the trucker hat prevents them from getting to that stage.

After the hat picks up these motions, it responds with different sensory actions to wake the driver. There’s sound, vibration, and two bright lights shine under the cap. This effectively stop the driver from dozing off, and they also know that they’re going through the motions of falling asleep.

With this knowledge, the trucker has the hat to keep them awake, and they can look for a stop area so they can rest.

The project isn’t finished. The inventors are hoping that as people gain more awareness of the SafeCap, they will get more innovative partners to help them refine the project to make it as effective as possible.

As the world’s innovators use technology to help solve truck accident problems, there’s a good chance of reducing truck accident fatalities and making the roads safer for everyone.

5 Smart Ways to Discourage Drunk Driving this New Year’s

5 Smart Ways to Discourage Drunk Driving this New Year’s

The holiday season usually brings a lot of opportunities to be with friends and family and celebrate this time of the year. But what people don’t think about is the reality of driving drunk.

781 people died in crashes involved with a drunk driver in December 2016. The U.S. Department of Transportation reported that over the past 5 years, about 300 people died because of drunk drivers between Christmas and New Year’s Day.

How Can You Avoid Drunk Driving on New Year’s?

During the holidays, you’ll probably have a few parties on your schedule. While these are fun, you should prepare for how you’re going to get home so you don’t feel like driving drunk is your only option.

One of the best ways to avoid drunk driving is to create a game plan before you go to a party. You won’t have to worry about figuring out logistics when you’re tired and ready to go home when the party is over. There are also ways to help your friends avoid drunk driving.

  • Have a Designated Driver. If you’re going out with a group of people, one person can be the designated driver. They won’t drink alcohol that night and will get everyone home.
  • Use Uber, Lyft, or Call a Taxi. Consider using a car service to get you home. Uber and Lyft have apps that are easy to use, or you can always get a cab.
  • Offer Non-Alcoholic Beverages and Food. As a host of a party, you can help by offering alternatives to alcohol. With non-alcoholic drink options and food, people might not drink as much as they would if alcohol was the only option.
  • Take Keys. As a host, it’s going to be difficult to keep track of everyone as the party goes on. Take car keys as people arrive and store them somewhere safe so you don’t have to worry about drunk people leaving to drive home. People might be annoyed or think you’re being too protective, but it’s worth it if it prevents someone from getting behind the wheel when they’re intoxicated.
  • Ask a Friend for a Ride. If you didn’t plan how you’re getting back and don’t know what to do, you can always ask a friend for a ride or help getting a ride home.

Every alternative is better than driving drunk. It isn’t worth the risk, and when you drive drunk, you’re risking everyone’s lives on the road.

Don’t Let Your Christmas Tree Become a Fire Hazard

Don’t Let Your Christmas Tree Become a Fire Hazard

One of the best Christmas traditions is getting a tree and decorated it with a star, lights, and ornaments. People who choose live trees can purchase one already cut or go to a Christmas tree farm and cut their own.

No matter what tree you get, you have to take care of it for it to stay healthy and above all, safe. When trees aren’t properly taken care of, they can dry up and become a serious fire hazard. It doesn’t take much for a dry Christmas tree to catch on fire, and only a few more seconds for it to go up in flames. According to FEMA, about 1 out of every 34 home Christmas tree fires resulted in death.

About 152,300 automobile fires were reported per year between 2006-2010. Collectively, 209 people lost their lives, 764 were injured, and the property damage was worth $536 million. 10 percent of reported U.S. fires were automobile fires.
